Introduction

In life, questions of identity, purpose, and worth are often central to our journey, shaping our understanding of who we are and why we’re here. Scripture speaks to these themes, offering a grounded sense of identity in Christ, clarity about purpose, and assurance of our worth. Each section below addresses one of these questions, guiding us back to the truth that our identity and purpose are rooted in God’s love and intentionality. Here’s a selection of verses in the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) that respond to our search for meaning and value.

Identity in Christ

Summary

Our identity as believers is transformed by Christ. In him, we’re not defined by past mistakes, labels, or doubts; instead, we’re made new, adopted into God’s family, and called his own. These verses reveal that our core identity is secure in christ, who brings us into a relationship with God and reshapes how we see ourselves and live in the world.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “So if anyone is in christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!”

  • Galatians 2:20 – “And it is no longer I who live, but it is christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

  • Ephesians 1:4-5 – “Just as he chose us in christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will.”

  • 1 Peter 2:9 – “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

  • Romans 8:1 – “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in christ Jesus.”

  • Colossians 3:3 – “For you have died, and your life is hidden with christ in God.”

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.”

Purpose

Summary

Each of us has a unique purpose given by God. As his workmanship, created in christ for good works, we’re meant to shine a light in this world and walk in the path God has prepared for us. The following verses offer encouragement, reminding us that God’s plans are good and that he equips us to fulfill them.
