Scriptures for the Day

·  2 Samuel 11:1-15 and Psalm 14:

King David's sin with Bathsheba and the consequences thereof are detailed. Psalm 14 reflects on the foolishness of those who reject God and contrasts them with those who seek Him for refuge and salvation.

·  2 Kings 4:42-44 and Psalm 145:10-18:

Elisha miraculously multiplies loaves of bread to feed a hundred people, demonstrating God's provision and abundance. Psalm 145:10-18 praises God's sovereignty, faithfulness, and provision for all living creatures, emphasizing His closeness to those who call on Him in truth.

·  Ephesians 3:14-21:

This is Paul's prayer for the Ephesian church, asking God to strengthen them through His Spirit, and expressing awe at God's power and love that surpasses understanding, uniting believers in Christ.

·  John 6:1-21:

Narrates the feeding of the five thousand by Jesus, demonstrating His compassion and divine power. It also includes Jesus walking on water, revealing His authority over natural elements and reinforcing His disciples' faith.

Themes

The passages share divine provision, miraculous intervention, and spiritual nourishment themes.  In 2 Samuel 11 and Psalm 14, we see a start contrast between human frailty and divine righteousness illustrated in the consequences of sin and the refuge one finds in God. 2 King 4:42-44 and Psalm 145:10-18 highlight God’s abundant provision, reminding us of God’s sovereignty and faithfulness. God’s love and power unite all believers through the Spirit, says Paul. And the Gospel of John showcases Jesus’ miraculous feeding of the multitude and walking on water. Jesus Christ is the bread of Life and the Divine Son who sustains and saves. Altogether, the passages and liturgy can remind us of God’s active presence which meets human needs, both physical and spiritual, and invite us to trust the Lord’s unfailing grace and provision.

Call to Worship

One: Come, let us gather in the presence of our God, who provides abundantly for our every need.

All: We come, seeking the refuge and righteousness found in God alone.

One: Like the miraculous provision of loaves, God abundantly supplies all that we require.

All: In awe, we praise the Lord, whose sovereignty and faithfulness are evident in all places at all times.

One: Let us proclaim our trust in God and let us rejoice in the Son who is the Bread of Life given to us from heaven.

All: With grateful hearts, we worship the Lord who sustains us physically and spiritually to eternal life.

One: Blessed be the name of the Lord, who provides, protects, and invites us into His presence.

All: With hope in our hearts and joy in our voices we raise our song to God.

Prayer of Confession

All: Loving God, we come before you with humble hearts, acknowledging our failures and shortcomings. Forgive us for the times we have spoken harshly or acted without compassion. Forgive us the moments when pride has clouded our judgment and selfishness has guided our actions. Help us to admit our wrongs without excuse, knowing that in your mercy there is sure forgiveness.

Lord, show us how to make amends where we have caused harm. Guide us as we seek to heal strained relationships. Rebuild trust and restore peace. May your Spirit work within us, transforming our hearts and renewing our minds. We trust in your unfailing mercy. (personal prayer)

One: Lord may your name be glorified in us and through us. We ask this through Christ Jesus, your only begotten son. It is he who is our Lord and our Savior, our brother and our friend.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon-1 John 1:9

Today’s assurance of pardon is declared to us from First John, chapter 1, verse 9, which says, “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Prayer of Illumination

Holy and Loving God,

As we gather to hear your Word, we humbly ask for your guidance and enlightenment. Open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may receive with joy what you have to say to us today.

May your Word challenge us where we need to grow, comfort us where we are hurting, and inspire us to live more faithfully as your disciples. Let your light shine brightly in our lives, transforming us into the image of Christ.

We seek your presence now, O Lord, and we ask that you speak to each of us in a personal and profound way. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Dedication

Lord, take these gifts and use them for your glory. May they bring hope to the hopeless, comfort to the afflicted, and joy to the sorrowful. Help us to be faithful stewards of your blessings, always ready to serve and to give. Guide us in using our time, talents, and resources to reflect your love and advance your purposes on earth.
